2009 Pigasus Awards

October 22, 2009 by PsychicPulse

Pigasus AwardFor all of you non psychic believers, you will love the Pigasus Awards. Founded by James Randi, a known skeptic of psychic energy, the Pigasus Awards are an annual event where Randi ridicules a person or institution and exposes them for paranormal, parapsychological or psychic frauds. Each year he puts together a list of nominees and on April Fools day each year he picks winners within a number of categories.

The Pigasus award trophy has been said to be a stainless steel spoon bent in a curve and supported by a flimsy plastic base. This of course is a reference to Geller’s claimed spoon bending capabilities. Better known however is the famous flying pig trophy. James Randi has stated sarcastically that the winners once announced on April the 1st will be notified telepathically and the trophies will be sent via psychokinesis. He states that if the trophy is not received it is because of their lack of paranormal talent.

Randi has made it his honor to expose what he considers to be psychic frauds and past winners have included Nostradamus, Sylvia Browne, John Edward, the White House as well as the Journal of Reproductive Medicine. As you can tell, no one and no institution is off limits. For a complete list of past winners visit Wikipedia.com.

April Fools day of course is known for its lavish pranks and jokes. No doubt this day was chosen specifically by Randi as he considers anything classified as paranormal to be a spoof.

Pigasus Award Winners for 2009

(for performances in 2008 announced in 2009 – the results have been taken directly from James Randi’s website.)

Category #1: To the scientist or academic who said or did the silliest thing related to the supernatural, paranormal or occult:

  • Dr. Colin Ross – A psychiatrist in Texas. He claims that he can send electromagnetic beams out of his eyes and is writing a book on it.

Category #2: To the funding organization that supported the most useless study of a supernatural, paranormal or occult claim:

  • The Producers of “Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed” – Logan Craft, Walter Ruloff, and John Sullivan. This was a movie in which its premise was to show that Intelligent Design (a rebranding of young Earth creationism in an attempt to circumvent multiple court decisions not to teach religion in public schools) is a viable alternative to evolution, and that Intelligent Design is being actively censored in academia.

Category #3: To the media outlet that reported as factual the most outrageous supernatural, paranormal or occult claims:

  • The makers of Enzyte. Enzyte is a male enhancement supplement. The CEO and founder of Enzyte, Steve Warshak and his mother, Harriet Warsjhak, were found guilty of conspiracy to commit all kinds of fraud. They were thrown in jail and had to claim bankruptcy. However the “Smiling Bob” commercials that feature Enzyte are still running and going strong.

Category #4: To the Performer who fooled the greatest number of people using the least talent:

  • Jenny McCarthy – A well-known model and actor. She has taken a stance for the last year that vaccines cause autism. She has very publicly encouraged people not to vaccinate their children.

Category #5: Most persistent refusal to face reality:

  • Kevin Trudeau – He has been charged twice in the past for lying in his ads and has had to pay hefty fines due to this. In 2008 he was charged once again for false claims, this time about his book “The Weight Loss Cure They Don’t Want You to Know About”.
